Nico FigueroaSchedule: Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Sat
Nico first took up drumming at the age of 12 years old when he joined his school’s percussion ensemble. What at first began as a means to learn the hard rock styles that he had heard in his house from a young age soon led to a deep passion for concert percussion. Around this time, Nico had the privilege of studying under world renowned percussionist Alex Acuña where he was first introduced to rich world rhythms. Nico continued playing percussion throughout his high school years which is when he took a particular liking to jazz rhythms and harmonies. As a part of Los Angeles District’s Honor Jazz Band, he played vibraphone at jazz festivals across the city including the Hollywood Bowl and Central Avenue jazz festivals. During this time he had the benefit of learning from many talented musicians and alumni of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at UCLA.
While in college, Nico took to the DIY scene in Los Angeles and played drums in various rock, funk, and neo-soul groups where he learned what it takes to put together a group and put on a great show outside of an academic setting. Since then, Nico’s found his way back to world percussion and afro cuban music and he now gigs with salsa and latin bands around the city. He currently works for a gifted music conservatory at a local middle school and enjoys reading and playing chess in his free time. An admirer of music of all types, Nico loves to help students along their musical journeys by providing students with the materials and assistance to fit their needs and interests.
