James Mullany
James Mullany is an LA based, multi instrumentalist, producer, and singer songwriter. Born in Boston, his lifelong musical journey began at the age of 12 joining concert band and taking drum and piano lessons from several graduates of Berklee College of Music. His passion for music led him to form a classic rock cover band with his four friends playing drums and performing at various Boston venues until 2011. That same year, he attended Berklee College of Music’s Five Week Program for Drums.

Throughout high school, James honed his music theory knowledge, piano playing, vocal abilities, arrangement techniques, and stage presence via musical theater, jazz choir, AP Music Theory, and a cappella performances. His expertise expanded into music production, learning to use music production software like Protools, Digital Performer, Logic Pro X, and Ableton 11 over a decade. He continued his music education at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in 2014, winning the BMI John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship in 2017. Collaborating with fellow NYU artists, his work garnered over 2,000,000 streams on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

After graduating, James relocated to Los Angeles in 2019, releasing his debut EP under the artist name j.mulay. He freelanced as a private music teacher, mixing engineer, and featured artist before joining Icon Collective in Burbank as a Music Instructor in 2022. At Icon, James taught several weekly 1 on 1 music mentoring sessions, but also taught collegiate level group classes in subjects such as Groove Theory, Music Theory, Ear Training, and Songwriting. As a keyboardist, he continues to perform at venues all throughout Boston, NYC, and LA, such as: Bowery Electric, Townhouse Venice, The Viper Room, The Satellite, Molly Malone’s, Adults Only, Brickyard Pub, The Knitting Factory Brooklyn, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Webster Hall, and many more.
